Alberta Security Guard Licensing Requirements

- successfully passed the Alberta Basic Security Training Course (ABST) exam
All security professionals must meet a specific English fluency standard. This is a level 5 benchmark according to the Centre for Canadian Language Benchmarks.
This Alberta basic security training online consists of seven (7) modules.
Students must complete all modules, logging a minimum total of 40 hours and then write the online Provincial exam under the supervision of a proctor with 80% or above to receive provincial certification and apply for a Security Guard License in Alberta.
Once you have logged your required 40 hrs you will be emailed your Training Certificate and instructions to book your Online Exam.
The online exam is paid separately to the exam provider and costs $60.
Security service worker licences are issued under the Security Services and Investigators Act by the Alberta Justice and Solicitor General.

After You Have Completed Your Course And Passed The Exam
The security service worker's licensing fee is $100. Your licence is valid for 2 years. This is paid directly to the government with your application.
The renewal process is the same as the initial application process.

The training syllabus (either online or in a classroom) is set by the Alberta Ministry of Justice and Solicitor General.
The Alberta Security Guard Training Course is a 40-hour security guard training online course designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills to work as a security professional. Registry Offices – Same-Day Licensing
Alberta Registry offices allow you to take your completed license application forms (with all the associated paperwork) directly to them. They will give you a temporary license valid for 60 days. A $9 cost for processing fee applies.
You will then be licensed and able to work immediately.
The permanent license will be issued and sent via Canada Post.
To get a temporary licence through a registry you must:
- be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
- have a clear criminal record and vulnerable sector search (police information check or background check)
- provide your completed application or renewal forms
- provide all required documents
- licence renewal requests are only accepted 60 days or less before the licence expiry date

The Alberta Security Guard Training Course is 40 hours in length.
How long does a security license take in Alberta?
After you have correctly submitted your paperwork it can take up to 3-4 weeks to receive your temporary license in your email (which allows you to work) while the permanent license card can take up to 6-8 weeks to arrive via Canada Post.
How many questions are on the Alberta Provincial Exam?
There are approximately 50 questions on the provincial exam for the Alberta security guard license. You must obtain a minimum mark of 80% to pass the exam. You have one hour to complete the exam.
How do I book a security exam in Alberta?
Once you have completed the 40 hours of study you then need to contact your training provider to obtain a Certificate of Completion and instructions on how to book the exam.
Can I use an Ontario security license in Alberta?
